Ugly Christmas Sweater season came quick… if you’re scrambling for ideas to sleighhh at your upcoming holiday party keep reading. This year I drew some inspiration from Meghan Trainor’s Jingle Ball outfit that I helped create. This sweater party was lit! (Quite literally). Meghan WOW-ed everyone with her fully custom ensemble.
We purchased some simple christmas items, like the sweater and skirt, and just decked ’em out. Which is actually my favorite thing to do. It’s so much better to customize and have a unique piece, than to have a basic sweater that anybody can just buy. I was a Basic B last year in an “ugly sweater” I purchased from a thrift store, yet I was complimented on how nice it was, which totally isn’t the point of an UGLY SWEATER party!!! Never again! So this year I decided to really go for it with all the bells and whistles in Santa’s workshop, including a Kardashian!
Tinsel cuffs of course xo
Here is how I made my fabulously-ugly xmas sweater:
These are the supplies I started with: a christmas sweater and some cheap Christmas decorations from Target.
Transfer Paper for transferring the image of Kim Kardashian onto plain white fabric. Obviously there are endless possibilities of what images you can transfer onto your christmas sweater…Get creative!
I took one of my old white tees and cut it up for my white fabric. Also, keep a strip of fabric… we will use this to make a pouch for the light’s battery pack later.
Print out the image onto your transfer paper and let it dry for 30 mins before you iron it onto the white fabric scrap.
Cut it however you would like it to appear on your sweater. I chose an oval shape.
Once you’re ready to iron, grab a cutting board or something that can take the heat. Do not iron directly on an ironing board.
Iron in circular motions making sure you hit every piece of your image for 15-20 secs. Peel the paper and it will reveal your image!
Cut your image out
With my No-Sew Fabric glue I applied a thin layer to the back of my cut fabric and then pressed it onto the sweater.
I then took those cheap xmas decorations and went to town with my glue gun. In this case the more the merrier !! And of course I had to add ornaments as Kim K’s bum.
To give your sweater some lights to outshine everyone follow these directions:
Grab some battery powered LED lights (I got these at Target). We have to make a pocket for the battery pack so its not hanging on for dear life at the end of your sweater. To do this take that strip of fabric we’ve already cut and place the battery on it for measure. Leave enough room to sew the sides and bottoms and cut that fabric as needed.
Since this is just a one time deal, I decided to just use hem tape. It’s so fast and easy to use as opposed to sewing.
*I bonded my battery pocket at the bottom center of my sweater.
Take your fabric and place the hem tape on the sides and bottom.
Iron it on so that its securely bonded.
Now you have a pocket for your battery pack.
Snip baby holes where you want the light bulbs to come through on your sweater.
Push the light bulb through
Secure the lights in place by stitching around each bulb. It is best to use the same color thread as your sweater because it may show.
Add batteries and your ready to shine brighter than any christmas tree.
If you find that you’re just not a DIY/crafty type of girl. Its totally ok! Here are some awesome and unique Christmas Sweater favorites you can purchase. The links are listed below.
